There aren’t many categories at this year’s CMA Awards with multiple women in them, but New Artist of the Year is one: Ashley McBryde and Carly Pearce are nominated, along with Midland, Cody Johnson and Morgan Wallen. But Ashley says it’s hard to think of her fellow nominees as competition.
“We work together, you know? Like, Carly and I, we like to sing songs together and hang out, and I really respect everybody in the category,” Ashley told ABC Audio on Tuesday. “So for people that you work with closely to celebrate you in a category like that…it’s awesome!”
Ashley also thinks it’s awesome that she’s nominated in a year where female artists are in the spotlight. On Wednesday night’s show, she’ll be part of a performance that includes Carly, Lindsay Ell, Runaway June, Maddie & Tae and Kelsea Ballerini — and she’s thrilled that Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton are hosting.
“You’ve got Reba and Dolly and Carrie on the same stage. I mean, the foundations could crumble because of all that power!” she laughed. “And not just star power, but just, like, powerful women. And that’s three different eras being represented at the same time.”
“That’s the best we have to offer,” she added. “And it’s really something to aspire to and really be proud of.”
Tune in to the 53rd annual CMA Awards Wednesday night on ABC to see if women — including Ashley — will win big.
